Secure Boot decides which kernel boots, and IMA decides which programs run. We link the two to lock down the whole system, from firmware to userspace, so only authorized software runs, and make sure an attacker cannot swap in their own signing keys.

Secure Boot reported as enabled in the uefi-data of Ubuntu and Amazon Linux AMIs in AWS but was enforcing nothing. We'll cover what Secure Boot is, why "enabled" doesn't always mean "enforcing," how to check your own AWS instances, and then take ownership of the trust root and watch a machine reject a tampered kernel before the OS even loads.

Linux has shipped a powerful integrity-enforcement mechanism since 2009, and almost nobody turns it on. We enable IMA live, measure everything that runs on a system, deny a tampered binary, and then look at the harder question underneath: not "has this file changed," but "should this have run at all?"

Your sysadmins, analysts, and auditors aren't bad at their jobs. They're being asked to do the impossible. We walk through three common security roles, show why each one fails for the same reason, and close with a thought experiment that reframes the whole problem.
